Skills Transfer
Reduce a Day’s Training to Less Than an Hour
In partnership with NYSEARCH, CraneMorley created this guide, which walks new users through all the tools and steps needed to assemble a new gas meter, from the service riser to the house line. The instruction set is complimented by photos, videos, and most importantly, 3D holograms that guide the project to completion. A brand new user with no experience is able to follow the steps and build out the entire gas meter in about 40 minutes. The original instructor-led course took more than a day.
Denso needed a way for technicians to learn how to rebuild a diesel fuel pump on their own, without attending an instructor-led class. Together with Denso, we created a hands-on skills transfer training utilizing virtual reality headsets to bring key lessons to life. Wearing the headsets trainees follow instructions and holographic images to understand how the diesel pump components work together. Trainees gain hands-on experience as they learn the proper techniques to disassemble a diesel fuel pump and put it back together.
Discovery Learning
Discover the Difference with “X-Ray Vision”
The Electric Vehicle Discovery Learning starts as an ICE vehicle rolls into the shop and its powertrain is magically replaced by EV components. The different components are isolated and trainees are able to see inside an EV, exploring the battery, electric motors, and controllers, etc. After they discover the different parts, they are given safety training on the lockout tagout process when working with a high voltage system.
Simulation
ECG monitoring systems vary in their design and custom features, but they all share the same key components. In this full simulation we walk through the basic functional components of an ECG monitoring system, how to prepare a patient for an ECG tracing, proper placement of electrodes and lead wires, how to ensure accuracy of the ECG tracing, and how to identify which rhythm the ECG tracing reads.
Guided Procedure
“The server is down.” Four words that can strike fear in the hearts of network administrators. Physical Drive Failure and RAM Module Failure may seem like simple fixes, but if not corrected properly, could be disastrous to a company’s data. Using Microsoft Guides and HoloLens 2 to identify and correct server problems allows frontline technicians to use images, videos, and checklists, as they are guided through the troubleshooting process. This prevents technicians from oversight or omitting essential steps.
CraneMorley worked with Corning experts to develop a Guides training module aimed specifically at error reduction when working with the HYPERStack cell culture vessel as seemingly simple errors have the potential to be very costly to clients. The CraneMorley instructional design team analyzed potential challenges and problem areas within the HYPERStack process and developed a guided procedure aimed at providing operators with key information, videos, and 3D models right in their field of view, so they are supported every step of the process.
Inspection
A technician new to the Porsche brand needs to learn component location to do their job. This previously required at least four days in the training center to physically disassemble one model type. Porsche provided CraneMorley with the CAD files for each model from which we built a holographic digital twin. This gives a technician wearing the HoloLens “X-ray” vision goggles, the ability to see holograms of the vehicle parts overlayed on a real vehicle. The training time is reduced to a day by eliminating the need to physically wrench apart a vehicle by exploring its digital twin. It also allowed Porsche to move this training out to the dealership which opened up training center capacity while saving dealer technicians time out of the shop.
Diagnosis
While on the job, technicians come across a variety of vehicle issues which cause noises that disturb their customers. For example, when a customer notices brake or chassis noise coming from their vehicle, they will reach out to their dealership Service Department to find and eliminate the noise. NVH training walks technicians through the correct brake or chassis noise diagnosis procedure in order to ensure the highest probability of Fixing It Right the First Time.
Troubleshooting
In partnership with SoCalGas, CraneMorley created this guide, which walks new employees through inspecting and troubleshooting a spring-operated regulator. The training is broken down into three different scenarios where a defective regulator is staged and students wearing the HoloLens will inspect, troubleshoot, and repair the different issues they come across on the job.
Digital Twin
In a collaboration between PECO, CraneMorley, and NYSEARCH, a mixed reality training module was designed that would teach users how to use the Bolt-On Tee Abandonment Tool. In the scenario when a worker does not have access to the equipment, a full-scale holographic copy or Digital Twin of the equipment is in front of them instead. The worker can watch the full procedure, observe as the tool assembles itself and experience the same tasks as if they were in front of the equipment.
Virtual instructor-led training (VILT)
An innovative way to breathe new life into Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) is to have the instructor wear the HoloLens and broadcast the training to learners on their PCs using Microsoft Remote Assist and Teams. The impact of these VILT sessions is increased by having technicians learn new material using 3D holograms and animations. Dynamics 365 Guides provides a PowerPoint-like framework, allowing the trainer to communicate with the audience about the holograms they are looking at and showing the audience animations which simulate repair procedures while providing commentary, and giving additional context as needed.
